Lufthansa announce Milan expansion
Lufthansa today has released details on its planned new mini-hub in Milan Malpensa for 2009.
The mini-hub in Milan Malpensa will be launched from February 2009, when the airline will be basing Airbus 319 aircraft (previously announced was Embraer E195) service European destinations including:
- Barcelona
- Brussels
- Bucharest
- Budapest
- Madrid
- Paris
With the launch of 2009 Summer timetable, it’ll be adding London and Lisbon route out of Milan.
The A319 will be operated by subsidiary Air Dolomiti, which currently operates under Lufthansa Regional brand on most of its route.
Milan Malpensa Airport lost major traffic since this Spring as Alitalia’s restructure de-hubbed the airport.
Horizon ends 5-month old Prince George flight
Horizon Air is ending its Seattle – Prince George service on 05OCT08, after 5 months of operation.
According to local news report, the load factor averages about 30% on a 70-seater Dash8-Q400.

Initiatives Prince George and Horizon had entered a year-long contract to bring the daily service to Prince George. As part of the deal, city council agreed to bear up to $400,000 of the risk, using taxpayers’ money, if the average load fell below 61 per cent whole nothing would be paid out if it was over 70 per cent.
Houston Airport closure due hurricane
Due to Category 2 (possible 3) hurricane Ike’s potential threat, all service at Houston InterContinental Airport (IAH) will be suspended from around Noon Central Time on Friday 12SEP08 through Saturday 13SEP08.
Limited service expected on 14SEP08.
Southwest suspends flight to Houston due hurricane
Southwest Airlines has announced all operations at Houston Hobby airport will be suspended starting 0900CT on Friday 12SEP08, due to potential threat of Category 2 hurricane Ike.
Continental to cancel Houston flight due hurricane
Due to potential threat of a direct hit from Hurricane Ike, Continental has announced it will be operating at a reduced schedule on Friday, 12SEP08.
On Friday 12SEP08, Continental’s mainline service should operate normally until early afternoon. Continental Express and Continental Connection will operate limited service until mid-morning or mid-day
On 13SEP08, Saturday, ALL Continental, Continental Express, and Continental Connection flight is expected to be suspended.
On 14SEP08, Sunday, it plans to resume operation with a reduced schedule.
Hurricane Ike as of 1200PDT on 11SEP08 is a category 2 hurricane, and is forecasted to hit south of Galveston Texas as a strong Category 3 late Friday or early Saturday.
PLUNA ends Madrid flight
PLUNA Uruguay has ceased Montevideo – Madrid service on 08SEP08.
AirAsiaX launch Perth service
AirAsiaX will start Kuala Lumpur – Perth service, 4 times a week.

AiRUnion to dissolve this month
The Russian airline conglomerate AiRUnion, which consists of KrasAir, Domodedovo Airlines, Omskavia, Sibaviatrans, and Samara Airlines, is to dissolve the end of this month at the earliest.
Report by ATWOnoline on 11SEP08, AiRUnion’s COO Gustav Baldur said the project had failed.
He added that the alliance will enjoy a state guarantee for fuel purchases until Sept. 14. After that date, Atlant-Soyuz, which also will be a member of the new alliance, will be the vehicle to operate AiRUnion flights until the end of the month. Then the first airline alliance in Russia will be history.
The new state-owned alliance, which should comprise nine carriers, will be owned 51% by Russian Technology with the other shares split between the cities of Krasnojarsk and Moscow.
Russian aviation experts told this website that the new airline cluster will be much more complex than the former AiRUnion, which included just five carriers, and expressed skepticism about the project. As yet, the new grouping does not have a name.
Venezuela cuts US carriers frequencies
According to Reuters News Agency, Venezuela has ordered US carriers to reduce number of flights to the Latin American country after the TSA issued safety warnings for American citizens.
The warning was mainly focused on the country’s airport security.
