Qualiflyer Alliance reunion: Brussels to join Star
Lufthansa and Brussels Airlines today issued a statement and held a press conference, announce the Star Alliance carrier will be acquiring 45% of Brussels Airlines.
The main agenda includes:
1. Acquisition of 45 per-cent in SN Airholding SA/NV after regulatory approval
2. Development of joint portfolio
3. Initiation of admission procedure to membership of Star Alliance
4. Adaptation and safeguarding of air traffic rights
5. Complete takeover of SN Airholding SA/NV and Brussels Airlines after securing traffic rights on the basis of a call option, which can be exercised from 2011
Once Brussels Airlines participates in the Star Alliance network, it marks the last member in the Qualiflyer Alliance in the late 90s has finally made its reunion in Star.
Former Qualiflyer member were: Swissair, Crossair, TAP Portugal, Austrian, Lauda, Tyrolean, LOT Polish, Sabena, PGA Portugalia. AOM and Air Liberte has since ceased operation. Swissair in early 2000s also held minority shares in South African Airways, which is also a Star Alliance member. The European carrier conglomerate was cooperating closely with oneWorld’s American Airlines back then, signaled the possibility of oneWorld participation.
