Air NZ/Air Canada Trans-Pacific co-op objected
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has shot down the proposed cooperation between Air New Zealand and Air Canada on the Vancouver – Sydney and Vancouver – Auckland route, which ACCC calls the agreement “reduce the competition”.
Air Canada has responded that such objection would lead to its cutback on Vancouver – Sydney service.
Under the cooperation, both would share the revenues on these 2 routes. Both Star Alliance members already codeshares on each other’s route. Air New Zealand has not yet responded.
However, the article by Sydney Morning Hearld points out that this type of cooperation is already in place between QANTAS and partner carriers on routes to Japan (with JAL) and South Africa (with SAA).
The AC-NZ cooperation deal was opposed by QANTAS, which also voiced its opposition on Air Canada’s attempt to start Los Angeles – Sydney in 2007
