China Airlines temporary reduce new Surabaya service

China Airlines is starting service to Surabaya from 20MAY09 as planned, but at reduced frequency temporary, citing aircraft utilization issue.

The airline will continue to operate Daily Taipei – Singapore service. But the new extension on the Singapore – Surabaya sector will operate 4 times a week only until 10JUN09 (then daily), departing SIN on Day x247. SUB departure is the following day.

Hewa Bora changes to EU operation

As per GDS timetable display on 19MAY09, Hewa Bora Airways has postponed its planned European operation until 30MAY09. Original date was planned on 02MAY09

In addition, service is operated by Boeing 757, instead of 767. Also, all service will be operating Kinshasa – Brussels – Paris CDG routing only. Previously planned service origination/termination at Lubumbashi and Brazzaville has been canned.

SIA/EGYPTAIR codeshare expansion

Singapore Airlines and EGYPTAIR starting 01JUN09 will be expanding the current codeshare agreement.

Singapore Airlines’ “SQ” code will appear on EGYPTAIR’s 1 of 2 Daily Dubai – Cairo service

Air Jamaica joins checked-bag fee but come back to get it in 7 days

Air Jamaica has announced a new baggage policy, which is only in effect on the New York – Grenada and New York – Barbados flight, starting July. Tickets issued after 11MAY09 will be affected by this policy.

Passengers ticketed on or before May 10, 2009 for travel on or after May 11, 2009 is NOT affected.

The airline has started charging $25 to check 2nd bag like other North American carriers. However, Air Jamaica is the first carrier that will not carry your 2nd checked-bag with you on the same plane, nor same day, but rather within 7 days. Travellers will be asked to pick up their 2nd checked bag at the airport in person.

According to the article by Travel Weekly, the airline says this is due to “Weight restriction” on the aircraft, which the airline operates Airbus A320 series.

AIRFRANCE re-scheduling Johannesburg service by Jul 09

As per GDS timetable display on 19MAY09, AIRFRANCE is shifting its operation on the Paris CDG – Johannesburg service to all-night-time flight starting 13JUL09.

The change involves in AF994. AF997 is now scheduled to leave Johannesburg 2 hours earlier

Saudia Defaults 09/10 Winter int’l op to all 777

As per GDS timetable display on 19MAY09, Saudi Arabian Airlines’ 2009/10 Winter season international operation is all defaulted to Boeing 777-200 aircraft.

Airbus A330, Boeing 747-300/-400, and Boeing 757 are not listed in the timetable for now.

Ethiopian increase capacity on relaunched Riyadh flight

As per GDS timetable display on 19MAY09, 2 of 3 weekly Ethiopian’s relaunched Addis Ababa – Riyadh route is to be operated by Boeing 757.

Day 24 operates with 757 while Day 7 sees 737 operating. The service resumes from 02JUN09

The codeshare agreement between Ethiopian Airlines and Alitalia subsidiary AirOne has ended

Ethiopian increase Asia service

As per GDS timetable display on 19MAY09, Ethiopian Airlines is to increase the frequencies on the following routes from 01JUN09.

Addis Ababa – Bangkok – Guangzhou Increase from 6 weekly to Daily
Addis Ababa – Bangkok – Hong Kong Increase from 3 to 5 weekly

As a result with the increase, overall frequency to Bangkok is lifted from 9 to 12 weekly

Air NZ plans 777 Rarotonga – LA service from Dec 09

As per GDS timetable display on 19MAY09, Air New Zealand is to operate Boeing 777-200ER on the 1 weekly Auckland – Rarotonga – Los Angeles service, starting 19DEC09.

The 777 is replacing 767 between 19DEC09 to 27FEB09 (LAX to RAR is 01MAR10).

Also during this period, Auckland – Rarotonga is standardized to Boeing 777 and Airbus A320 service

Hellenic Imperial launching operation on 27MAY09

New Greek carrier Hellenic Imperial Airways will be taking off on 27MAY09 with Boeing 747-200.

It’ll be operating service from Athens to Birmingham UK, Casablanca and Jeddah

Macau gains access to Tokyo Narita in 2010

Japan and Macau in principal has agreed that when the 2nd runway extension project at Tokyo Narita is completed by March 2010 (scheduled), carriers from Macau will be able to operate 3 weekly Macau – Tokyo Narita service.

Note that this isn’t an official bilateral deal talks, but rather opinion exchanges.

JAL expands QANTAS codesharing through Singapore

JAL from 01JUN09 will expand its codeshare agreement with QANTAS. The new codeshare service covers routes via Singapore.
