DELTA to Reduce Tokyo Haneda capacity with 777 replace 747 from Jun 2011

by JL

As per 05MAR11 GDS timetable display, DELTA from late-May 2011 is shredding capacity Tokyo Haneda with Boeing 747-400 replaced by 777-200ER. However, service-wise is an upgrade with the recon-figured Boeing 777-200ER aircraft operating.

Detroit departure with Boeing 777 in effect from 31MAY11, Los Angeles from 02JUN11. Changes from Tokyo Haneda goes in effect from 03JUN11 to Detroit and 02JUN11 to Los Angeles.

The 777-200ER aircraft to operate Detroit – Tokyo Haneda – Los Angeles – Tokyo Haneda – Detroit pattern, and per display, Boeing 777 service continues into Winter 2011/12 schedule.

Planned Schedule from 31MAY11, note further changes possible:

Detroit – Tokyo Haneda
DL627 DTW2015 – 2230+1HND 777 x136
DL627 DTW2045 – 2300+1HND 777 136

DL628 HND0655 – 0605DTW 777 D

Los Angeles – Tokyo Haneda
DL635 LAX0110 – 0455+1HND 777 D
DL636 HND0030 – 1920-1LAX 777 x135
DL636 HND0045 – 1935-1LAX 777 135

Note: The US Department of Transportation granted DL LAX HND slots in 2010 due to capacity issue:

We tentatively find that Delta’s significant capacity advantage is particularly compelling at Los Angeles, clearly the largest Tokyo traffic generator of the proposed west coast gateways to Haneda. Although American utilizes Los Angeles as a “focus” airport, and would have the additional connecting traffic of Alaska and Horizon, Delta’s Los Angeles proposal would inject 63% more capacity into the U.S.-Tokyo market than American’s Los Angeles proposal with its B777 aircraft, and 50% more than United’s San Francisco proposal with its B777 aircraft. Thus, Delta’s proposed Los Angeles-Haneda service would provide passengers the largest capacity in this large market to offer a practical alternative service option to the existing Narita services available from Los Angeles.

Please refer to Document DOT-OST-2010-0018-0073 for DOT’s decision, including quoted decisions above.

That is absurd. DL lied to DoT that they can use the 747. Exactly what I thought they would do. But, about 120 less seats is a lot! And also that times twi, 240! DL, this is what you would do.

DELTA didn’t lie as they are operating Boeing 747 to HND for the moment. It’s either DL being clever or too optimistic about HND route.

Trying to be clever. Should have went to UA from SFO.

It should be HND authorities to blame. If daytime slots are allowed for long-haul international flights, DL’s 747 could be very easily filled up.

DOT’s decision is quite straight-forward after well consideraion. Non-aligned and newcomer HA is encouraged in the first. Most biggest O&D markets, LAX and NYC, have priority. DTW has the most convenient connections to the rest of the country.

Shameful that UA did not apply for ORD which could have outplayed DL’s DTW route.
